Team Strength = Professionally Polished

The Tumbler Effect in Teams
Steve Jobs once told a story about putting rough stones into a canister with grit, shaking it overnight, and finding that the friction had polished them into something smooth and beautiful. He saw this as the work of a team: conflict, debate, and pressure aren’t negatives, they’re the forces that refine us.
If we extend that analogy:
The Canister = The Team Environment
This is the container we all share. It holds us together, provides boundaries, and sets the conditions for growth.
The Rocks = Each of Us
We come in raw—unpolished, uneven, full of potential. It’s only through being in proximity with others, bumping into their ideas and perspectives, that we smooth out and shine.
The Grit = Healthy Conflict and Partnership
Without tension, friction, and challenge, there’s no polishing. Conflict that is respectful and purposeful is what actually sharpens strengths and exposes blind spots.
The Tumbling = The Process of Working Together
Day after day, showing up, being honest, being vulnerable, and not hiding our rough edges. That motion, that constant engagement, is what transforms us.
The Critical Question: Which do you choose for you and your team?
